On Tuesday February 26th, Burlington-area Green Mountain Roller Derby (GMRD) and Montpelier-based Central Vermont Roller Derby (CVRD) officially merged under the Green Mountain Roller Derby title.
Central Vermont Roller Derby formed in 2010 and was active in Montpelier, holding bouts at the B.O.R. in Barre and participating in community events around the area. After the 2016 season, many of the team’s skaters retired and the team had been rebuilding ever since. During the 2018 season, CVRD and GMRD grew more united, with CVRD lending skaters to GMRD’s Grade A Fancy team, and the two leagues sharing practices. In December, CVRD approached GMRD with a proposal to formally merge the teams under the GMRD moniker. After extensive review by both leagues, the merger was approved with the intent of better serving the leagues’ skaters and their fans.
The now more expansive GMRD is excited about the change and anticipating a bright future. Spectators and fans can look forward to the first game of the season on March 30th at the Champlain Valley Expo. Those looking to join the team or give roller derby a try are encouraged to attend rookie practices on Sundays at 12:30pm at the Montpelier Rec Center, or Tuesdays at 8:30pm at the Champlain Valley Expo.
